So you've made it to the Application Performance Management community and you're wondering what there is to do. Plenty. Here are my top eight suggestions. As you get familiar with the resources here, feel free to add to the list. To do so, choose Edit Document from the Actions box at right, find the section you want to add to, and type away. Click Publish to take your changes live.
- Research answers to your problems/challenges/ questions. In this community, you'll find many articles, white papers, videos, podcasts and resources dealing with various aspects of application performance management. Dive in by exploring the items in the Areas of Interest box on the overview page or join one of these industry or content-specific groups:
- Update your profile. Yes, the community is loaded with text, video, and audio APM resources. But the great value of any community lies with its members. Let us know who you are, what you're good at, and what you're interested in. (You can learn a bit about me here and here.) Why fill out more about yourself when you've already completed a registration to gain access to the site? Your registration details are mostly hidden from the community at large so that you can control how much information you want to share. Sharing a few details about yourself (your professional expertise, for example) will help you connect with other community members who have similar interests or expertise. And connections lead to opportunities to learn from and with each other. If you're already involved in Twitter or another form of social media, you know how well this can work (and, if you tweet, add your self to this list of APM tweeple (people who tweet, get it?). To update your profile, go to the pull down menu called Your Stuff in the nav bar across the top of this page and choose Profile. Once your page opens, click Edit profile from the Actions box.
- Upload a picture and/or an avatar. Everyone likes to put a face with a name. I'm notoriously camera shy, but I've included a real photo. You'll grow awfully tired of me if I'm the only face you see on this site. If you're already in your profile, click Change photo and avatar from the Actions box. To find your profile, see the instructions above.
- Ask a question. If you don't find the answers you're seeking in the materials that are on the site today, why not ask a question? Someone in the community may know the answer. To ask a question, choose Start a discussion from the Actions box.
- Answer a question. As of today April 28, there are two open questions in the Application Performance Management community: The poll on the overview page, and the Do you use Twitter? discussion. To participate in the discussion, click Reply in the bottom right corner of the entry.
- Rate the content. If you like what you find here, let us know by rating it or making a comment. If you don't like it, let us know that, too (politely, of course). By making your opinions known, you'll help shape the content here. To rate a document, blog, or other item, click the appropriate star under My Rating, which is just above the comments section.
- Invite a friend. Let colleagues in your department and other departments (here's the complete list of available communities) know about this resource. Click Invite friends to join in the Actions box that's on pretty much every page.
- Sign up for email notifications or RSS feeds. New content gets added to the community all the time. If you sign up for email notification (simply click Receive email notification under Notifications in the Actions box), you'll find out who is posting what and get a direct link to the new information. If you'd rather not clutter up your in box, you can use the RSS feeds to follow along. Simply click View feeds next to the RSS icon under Notifications in the Actions box and click on the feed you want to subscribe to. Note: You may need to use an RSS aggregator that supports private feeds.
